For those of us that suffer from varicose veins, the symptoms can at times be very debilitating. If you have a serious condition, challenging irritation can make way to intense pain when you sit or stand too long. Being able to only put up the situation for a while, it doesn’t take long to try to figure out how to get rid of varicose veins.

A very common method that physicians use is called leg vein “stripping”. It’s pretty easy to imagine how it’s performed; when you think the physician does nothing more than make two small incisions. One incision is made around the calf muscle in the other incision is made up by the growing. The varicose veins in your leg can easily be removed by just pulling the vein out from either end.

Sometimes the veins are twisted and require that an incision be made every 2 to 3 inches along the course of the vein so they can be pulled out in smaller pieces. While this adds to many more incisions on your leg, a skillful surgeon will either carefully stitch or staple the incisions closed. Within a week or two the site of the incisions generally are difficult to see.

Sclerotherapy is another popular treatment where the doctor injects a specific solution, generally in saline, straight into the affected varicose vein. Within a short amount of time the varicose vein becomes swollen and highly irritated. After that scar tissue will form on the inside of the vein causing it to close up completely. Once the vein is closed it will begin to dissolve and fade away over time. Blood that would normally flow through this vein is now redirected into healthier veins in the surrounding area.

This procedure can usually be done in your physician’s office requiring only a short visit. Depending on the number or size of varicose veins, it may be necessary to have repeated office visits for additional treatments. Generally, there is very little pain in this treatment, usually described as a heat sensation or burning. As the area begins to heal after treatment you’ll notice a slight itching sensation. This is very common.

Additionally there is a procedure called Thermal Ablation, which like Sclerotherapy, uses a procedure to close and dissolve the affected varicose vein. Instead of using a liquid saline solution Thermal Ablation uses an electrical current.

Laser Ablation, attempts to reach the same results as Thermal Ablation and Sclerotherapy in that it works to close off the affected varicose vein allowing it to dissolve. Unlike using electrical current or a saline solution, Laser Ablation uses intense heat from a laser.

In your research on how to get rid of varicose veins, it is best to seek advice from a qualified physician that has performed many types of these procedures. During your doctors visit should become aware of every procedure available, which ones they perform in the office, and which procedure is best indicated for the type of varicose veins you are experiencing.
